How to Respond to NDIS Incidents Correctly

When an incident occurs in your NDIS organisation, the way you respond matters enormously. A well-handled incident can demonstrate strong governance. A poorly handled one can trigger compliance action.

Immediate Steps

The first priority is always participant safety. Once safety is secured, you need to document what happened, assess whether it meets the threshold for reportable incidents, and notify relevant parties including the NDIS Commission if required.

Reportable Incidents

Under the NDIS Act, certain incidents must be reported to the NDIS Commission within specific timeframes. These include the death of a participant, serious injury, abuse or neglect, unlawful sexual or physical contact, and the use of unauthorised restrictive practices.

Documentation Requirements

Every incident, whether reportable or not, should be documented thoroughly. Your records should include what happened, when and where, who was involved, what immediate actions were taken, and what follow-up is planned.

NDIStress members receive priority triage support when incidents occur, helping you respond appropriately and confidently.
